• Background of Pontoon

    [ English ]

Blackjack – also known as ‘Chemin de Fer’ and ‘pontoon’ – is a game that is usually found in a casino with people attempting their fortune on acquiring the elusive ‘21′. It’s commonly believed that the game started in France amid the 17th century. However, as with many other gambling games the precise development of the game is still a mystery.

Black jack was brought to the US after the French Revolution, but the game did not become favored in the gambling dens until the casino provided payouts as a bonus. This was the only way that seemed to get players gambling on pontoon. One variant on the bonus payout was for a player to make ‘21′ with the blackjack card (given a value of ten points) and an ace (valued at eleven points). With the increasing appeal of the game the payouts were canceled but the name ‘twenty-one’ stayed.

Chemin de fer isn’t just about achieving a straight ‘twenty one’, but the primary challenge is to defeat the croupier without busting. The casino certainly has a house edge over the gambling players in the long term, but with pontoon the player retains an element of choice.

Since 1931 when America initial legalized betting, twenty-one has developed into a traditional betting house game. Furthermore, it’s the fusion of both ability and mathematics used in chemin de fer that has caused the game to be massively loved. Pontoon gives an appealing adventure to any academic, math guy or betting player wanting to examine the strategy of the game.
